The history of Triangle Mints

Triangle Mints joined Triangle Kush, a Florida OG cut, with an Animal Mints male at Seed Junky Genetics in Southern California. Once called Octagon Kush, the line became known for one phenotype, #23, which won as Triangle Mints #23 in 2018 and went on to fame as Wedding Cake.1,2,3,4

Timeline

  1. Early 1990sOG Kush is first cultivated in Florida, by Leafly’s account; Seed Junky later calls Triangle Kush its favorite OG Kush cut.1,5
  2. 1990sTriangle Kush is bred by accident in Florida, according to SeedFinder’s entry for the clone-only cut, which traces it to a Hindu Kush and a local variety called Emerald Triangle.6
  3. Early 2000sSeed Junky Genetics starts in a small garage in Southern California, according to its SeedFinder breeder page.2
  4. About 2007San Francisco breeder Jigga crosses his F1 Durb with a “Flo Rida OG Kush” to make Girl Scout Cookies, the strain behind both parents of Animal Mints.3,7,8
  5. By 2018Seed Junky crosses Triangle Kush with an Animal Mints male; its description gives the line’s former name as Octagon Kush.1,3
  6. 2018Triangle Mints #23, also known as Wedding Cake, wins first place for best hybrid at the SoCal Medical Cannabis Cup.3
  7. Dec 2019Leafly names Wedding Cake its 2019 Strain of the Year, Seed Junky’s first, and reports that the breeder lists it as a phenotype of Triangle Mints.9,10

Why the line matters

Mostly through one plant. The #23 phenotype spread widely through cuttings as Wedding Cake, which Leafly named its 2019 Strain of the Year, and Wedding Cake in turn became a parent of Ice Cream Cake, LA Kush Cake and Wedding Pie, each a state’s top seller in Leafly’s 2025 orders.4,10,13,18,19,20

The line itself keeps breeding. SeedFinder counts 29 direct descendants from breeders including Seed Junky, Alien Labs, 1904 Genetics, Green Team Genetics, Frosty Mountain Genetics and Surfr Seeds, and it still turns up under its own name, from 710 Labs’ list of clone-only genetics to a Missouri dispensary menu.21,22,23

The breeder

Seed Junky Genetics, whose breeder goes by J Beezy, started in a small garage in Southern California in the early 2000s, and its SeedFinder page credits it with Ice Cream Cake, Wedding Cake, The Soap and Jealousy.2,9 Leaf Magazines reported in 2026 that it works out of a 50,000-square-foot converted rocket factory in Northridge, California, and earns most of its revenue not from seeds but from selling flower in California and licensing its genetics to partners in New York, New Jersey, Michigan, Illinois, Arizona and New Mexico, plus Germany, the United Kingdom and Australia.24

Where the name comes from

From its parents. Triangle Kush, Leafly says, is named after Florida’s three cannabis-producing capitals, Jacksonville, Miami and Tampa, and Animal Mints has an aroma Leafly calls minty on the exhale.25,26 Before it was Triangle Mints, the breeder’s description says, the line was called Octagon Kush.1

The disputed parts of the story

  • Line or cut: Leafly subtitles Triangle Mints “aka Wedding Cake” and Weedmaps’ Triangle Mints address opens its Wedding Cake page, while Weedmaps’ own text, Leafly’s family tree and SeedFinder treat Wedding Cake as one phenotype or descendant of the line (see genetics).4,21,27
  • Indica or sativa: Leafly and AllBud say 70% sativa, but its parents and its best-known phenotype lean calming on Leafly.25,27,28,29
  • Date: no source we found dates the cross itself; the earliest dated event is the 2018 SoCal Medical Cannabis Cup won by its #23 phenotype.3
  • Triangle Kush’s origin: Leafly says it originated in Florida; SeedFinder’s clone-only entry adds a Hindu Kush × Emerald Triangle parentage that it attributes to rumor and folklore, and Seed Junky calls it an OG Kush cut.1,6,25
  • Flowering time: 9–10 weeks per the breeder, about 67 days in SeedFinder’s summary, and 8–9 weeks per Hytiva.1,30
