Is Triangle Mints indica or sativa? Its genetics and family tree

The two parents

Triangle Kush, also sold as Triangle OG and OG Triangle, is an indica that Leafly says originated in Florida and is named after the state’s three cannabis-producing capitals, Jacksonville, Miami and Tampa.² SeedFinder’s entry for the clone-only cut repeats the story that it was bred by accident in Florida in the 1990s from a Hindu Kush and a local variety called Emerald Triangle, and calls it a close relative of OG Kush; Seed Junky describes it as its favorite OG Kush cut, held for many years by what it calls “the Florida crew”.^1,10

Animal Mints is a hybrid of Animal Cookies and SinMint Cookies with an aroma Leafly describes as minty on the exhale. Both of its parents are Girl Scout Cookies crosses, Animal Cookies with Fire OG and SinMint Cookies, from Sin City Seeds, with Blue Power, and Seed Junky calls its Animal Mints male “Girl Scout Cookie dominant”.^1,3,4,5 Leafly lists Wedding Cake and Kush Mints among Animal Mints’ children.³

By Leafly’s accounts, both sides have Florida roots: Triangle Kush originated there, and the Girl Scout Cookies behind Animal Mints came from the San Francisco breeder Jigga crossing his F1 Durb with a “Flo Rida OG Kush”, a type of OG Kush, which Leafly says was first cultivated in Florida.^2,11,12 The breeder’s own summary is that the offspring show “very nice combinations of OG kush and Girl Scout Cookies”.¹

One line, one famous cut

Seed Junky created the Triangle Mints line, and its standout #23 phenotype became Wedding Cake and spread widely through cuttings, according to Weedmaps; Leafly’s Wedding Cake page says it is also known as Triangle Mints #23, and under that name it won first place for best hybrid at the 2018 SoCal Medical Cannabis Cup.^6,11,13 In 2019 Leafly reported that the breeder listed Wedding Cake on Instagram as a phenotype of Triangle Mints.¹⁴

Databases blur the line and the cut. Leafly’s Triangle Mints page is subtitled “aka Wedding Cake” yet lists Wedding Cake as its child, Leafly’s Wedding Cake page lists Triangle Mints as a parent, and Weedmaps has no separate Triangle Mints page: its Triangle Mints address opens the Wedding Cake page, which lists Triangle Mints and Triangle Mints #23 among Wedding Cake’s other names.^6,7,13 Leafly’s 2024 guide to Cake strains says Wedding Cake picked up the Triangle Mints #23 name as it crossed state and national lines, and SeedFinder keeps the two apart, listing Wedding Cake, a Wedding Cake Bx1 and a Wedding Cake F4 among Triangle Mints’ 29 direct descendants.^8,15

Octagon Kush, Triangle Mintz and other names

Seed Junky’s own description, as published by SeedFinder and GrowDiaries, begins “Triangle Mints (formerly Octagon Kush)”, and AllBud and Hytiva say it is also known as Octagon Kush.^1,16,17,18 The spelling “Triangle Mintz” circulates too: SeedFinder uses it for Seed Junky’s line in two crosses, and in state lab records it leads the near-miss names our matching excluded.^8,19

How sativa is it?

Most labels say sativa-leaning: Leafly and AllBud give 70% sativa and 30% indica, SeedFinder lists Seed Junky’s version as mostly sativa, and Hytiva calls it sativa-dominant.^1,7,17,18 The family points the other way. Leafly lists Triangle Kush as an indica and places Animal Mints and Wedding Cake on the calming side of its scale, and it describes Surfr Seeds’ Trophy Wife, bred from Triangle Mints and its F2, as an indica hybrid.^2,3,9,13

Seeds and cuts

Seed Junky’s Triangle Mints is listed as regular seeds: SeedFinder says it was never available as feminized seeds, and both SeedFinder’s breeder list and GrowDiaries list it as regular.^1,16,20 It also circulates as a cutting: 710 Labs lists a clone-only Triangle Mints, Triangle Kush × Animal Mints, among its genetics.²¹

Other breeders have made their own lines from it. SeedFinder lists Trophy Wife from Surfr Seeds and Six Senses from G13 Labs as Triangle Mints × Triangle Mints crosses; Leafly calls Surfr Seeds’ Trophy Wife a cross of Triangle Mints and Triangle Mints F2 with minty, dank, menthol notes, and says a different, unrelated Trophy Wife also exists.^8,9

What our lab data adds

In our data, 22 of the 234 tests carry the name "Triangle Mints #23", the name Leafly and Weedmaps give to Wedding Cake; 21 of them come from Maryland, where every test came from a single lab.^6,13,19 Those tests ran higher, 26.96% median against 22.41% for the other 212, though with one lab behind most of them the gap cannot be put down to the plant alone.¹⁹ Records from Michigan also include 5 tests named "Triangle Mints #7".¹⁹

Our strict matching left out 210 results across all product types (145 of them flower) sold under near-miss names, led by "Triangle Mintz Flower" (79 results) and other "Triangle Mintz" spellings, plus crosses such as "Rocket Fuel x Triangle Mints"; none of them count toward the 234 tests on this site.¹⁹
